Any recommendations for a home security system besides a dog?

Our new house has a preinstalled Brinks home system. After searching reviews, it appears they are a hit/miss in terms of customer complaints and complements. Does anyone have any honest opinions and stories about who is a better home security system provider. Thanks.
Who is a better home security company to go with, ADT, Brinks or some other firm? Any good stories and suggestions?

Security begins with knowledge about your vulnerability to intruders, how tempting your home is to intruders and who you have invited to your home. Most burglaries are committed by persons who have been in the home in the recent past. Know who you allow in to your home, have nothing that an intruder can easily convert to money. The most common targets are computers, cash, home entertainment items, guns, drugs and alcohol. Make your home hard to enter, thieves are lazy, know your neighbors, be aware of strangers in your neighborhood. Make friends with your neighbors. Even a rose bush or a cactus in front of your windows may deter a thief.

You can use the system and get someone else to monitor it. The fees vary from $25-$35 a month. Unless you have a contract with Brinks you don’t have to use their monitoring system
