I just moved to Norwood, South Africa (outside of Johannesburg) from Houston, USA. I purchased a 2-storey house that came with a perimeter fence and barbed wire along the top, but considering the high crime in the country, do you think it will be enough? Should I spring for a CCTV system or something?

No ,unfortunately it is not enough . A good size energizer would help too . Remember ,whatever you do it is merely a time-delaying factor ! If they want in ,trust me they will ! CCTV are inexpensive and a good idea .I like the wireless infra-red parameters which is also ”pet active” . You can hardly see them and let’s you know if the intruders are still on the outside !

No…not at all they kill you going into your home in your drive way or enterance . It’s far better to have no wall what so ever no shrubbs a clear view of the front of the house is much safer with a dog on a runner full width of your property. .A wall arround the sides and back will be ok . I suggest you go to Church on sundays and pray…….
And getting a couple of Rottweilers (about 4-6) may help a little, but my personal choice would be some pet crocodiles, lion cubs or something similar. I must say, you are one brave man to have made this move. Best wishes in your new home.
No it is not enough I can easily climb over a barbed wire fence, you just throw a carpet over or even better just cut the wire with a wire cutter. The best is to get beams (laser) around the perimeter of your house, you want to stop the criminal before it enters your house, as soon as he breach the beam, the alarm goes off and armed response comes to check it out. While you are at it get yourself a decent pistol or revolver. You do not want to sit in your house with just a base ball bat and 6 men come through the door with knives, pangas and guns.
Keep snakes and advertise this to your friends.
If you don’t want to have them as pets adopt them. Go to the snake park and get a few nice photos of yourself with a very large python draped around your neck. Put a sign on the fence at regular intervals saying Beware of Snakes.
There used to be a company making electrified burglar bars and one could get cameras as well. Sign up for armed response.
Perhaps if you would like to employ three or four of my old friends, who could loll about in the garden with their Kalashnikovs… That would be a very good way of dissuading adventurers.
