To answer your questions - no reason to own the equipment - if you own it, you pay parts & labor on ALL repairs. If alarm company owns it (as with either Brinks or ADT) they usually cover parts in many cases - read the contract on that - some just cover wear & tear only. Brinks covers lightning & most repairs to parts.

Both companies have a contract - in most states Brinks is 3 year, ADT is 5 year. Brinks contract has fixed monitoring rate, ADT's allows for increases throughout the 5 year term of the contract.

Both offer keyfobs for activating & deactivating the alarm.

Most police jurisdictions require a phone call to the site first & the alarm will require either a phone line or internet connection to be monitored. If your home number is your cell, that can be the first call - order of calls is totally up to you.

What are you looking for in a home security system? The equipment is cheap if you wanna install your self - it's pretty simple and you can monitor your home yourself if you have an internet connection. Other than that you paying for a monitoring service.

Most of the systems now days are wireless or X10 type products. If it's hardwired they have to run wires thru the crawl space or attic. I wouldn't use either and install a wireless system with cameras and look for a remote alarm that you can turn off yourself.

But if you want monitoring, shouldnt' matter which company you chose as long as they have a package suitable to your needs.
