CCTV that is used not only on street corners but in the air itself through unmanned drones. To the younger generation, this is becoming the norm. A time free from these pestilences will seem like ancient history. The bus doesn’t stop here, I can guarantee you more absurd things will come into practice. CCTV in the homes of potential terrorist suspects. Maybe even CCTV lodged in the base of our skulls. Remember when Orwell thought telescreens were sciencefiction, that CCTV would be the worst they could ever do? Think again. I will not stand down and be ruled like a permissive whore. Who will rise with me, and battle these demons till the bloody and bitter end, not for your freedom, but the idea of freedom itself, which so many have fought for and given their lives for before, now betrayed by politicians in the name of $

To those who say we deserve to be watched, I say that we have spanned a glorious history over several thousands of years without this invasive technology that is only the tip of the ice-berg. Do not be decieved. CCTV is not there for your protection, but to gather evidence for your prosecution.

The worst part about the cameras shows up in a lot of the answers – we are being desensitized, we are becoming okay with being watched all the time.
If that saying, if you aren’t doing something wrong why do you care, were true, they the bushies would not be fighting so hard not to appear before congress and testify under oath, right??
But I bet when you get mugged one dark evening you’ll be the first to moan when the police cant do anything do to lack of CCTV in the area.

I too am disturbed by the proliferatino of TV cameras on every stop light on every intersection in my city. The potential for use as a means of social control is only too evident. I don’t think its a proposed system being put in place as much as it is a resource that will be used or abused when somebody wants to. I wonder if a pellet gun could take one out.

The thing about CCTV is that it is not a homogeneous, co-ordinated network. There is not the capacity for the sort of Ingsoc security you describe.
Well, when humanity can start acting like humanity again, and not a bunch of animals all fighting to be alpha male, shooting, raping, murdering, kidnapping and of course, strapping themselves with explosives, then maybe we can see a decrease in the presence of crime prevention through cameras that look at street corners.
So unless you’re getting changed or makin’ it with your girl on the corner, then I don’t see how some underpaid, over-glorified security guard watching monitors in City Hall is really going to effect your life.
Besides…god forbid you ever find yourself in trouble on the street, I doubt you’ll complain very much when the police save your arse from getting beat or worse.
