I want to be able to store alot of MP3 , movies and photos and have them accessible by all computers on the network.
I want to be able to view the videos and movies on an HDTV
Id like to know if there is a wireless solution to being able to play the music through out the house in different rooms.
Id finnally like to be able to connect some security cameras to the network and have them recorded to the network storage device and be able to be accessed remotely on the internet.
so i looked at the sonos player which is nice but seems limited ..
D-Link has a great series of tutorial videos on their web site that cover all of the wireless applications you mention.
D-Link makes some great products for the solution also.
Other companies have many of the same types of products available also.
For the Base storage concept, that covers MP3s, Videos, and Security recordings:
I suggest you use an older PC with a Gigabit Ethernet card, positioned close to your Wireless router. I suggest either using Linux (Fedora or Kubuntu) with a Samba share for the storage or Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro with a network share. The system you use for this doesn’t need to have cutting edge hardware. The two most important factors for a good file server system are the Network Interface Card (NIC) and disk storage space. 512M of RAM would be plenty. Video card is irrelevant, this system could be "headless" even. I’d suggest you have two drives that 1 TB each, in RAID1.
For the media sharing, I recommend you have:
1) A high end 802.11 draft n Wireless router with Gigabit Ethernet ports such as the D-Link DIR-825 or DIR-855. Both of these products support QoS and allow you to prioritize Video Streaming on your network.
2) A "media bridge" such as the D-Link DAP-1555 to connect all of your media center type devices to the Wireless network.
3) You may also need a "Digital Media Player" device. XBox 360 has this capability built-in.
Depends on how much money you want to spend. Bose has a crazy nice system for handling all of the music. Linksys and others can handle wireless storage for whatever media and then have a PC connected to an HDTV for viewing. Can also use Linksys cameras to do IP video storage for your security system.
