today i visited a local run sports shop.

i purchsed a top £39.99 and then on way out noticed shorts and socks , i went to till and the asst put them in same bag and tried to charge me for all 3 items ( til did not have scanner ), he apologised and asked for £15 for socks and shorts and i said goodbyes etc etc.

i got home and received a call saying i had not paid for the top and had to go back with £39.99 , i sai doh sorry i am sure i did i will return asap.

i checked my wallet and found 2 receipts

£39.99 10.51 am receipt 1
£15.00 10-54am receipt 2

i then took out all receipts from that day and noted i withdrawn £250 cash , added up all my expendeture that day and it add up to £220 with approx £30 cash remaining.

QUESTION : can i be forced to pay for goods ?

i have asked for their viewand also asked to see if any cctv was recording . i feel guilty but i know i am not.

thanks in advance for advice

  1. Mr. X. says:

No, you have the receipt to prove you have already paid.
No you do not have to return to the shop, but what I do not understand is, how did the shop get your phone number?

You still have nothing to worry about, simply show them the receipts, (but I would recommend photocopying them first!)

  2. ALLEN B says:

    No you can’t.
Offer to return to the shop with your receipts but you expect them to pay your expenses.
Be firm, they are way out of order, mention your local newspaper have shown interest in the story, remember they are accusing you of theft !

  3. gavmel259 says:

Well If you have a receipt to state you have paid then take it with you to the shop.

They have to prove beyond reasonable doubt with evidence to accuse you of not paying.

And you have a receipt to say you have paid for item. It not your fault the till can’t recognise actual item purchased.

    Hell NO!

  5. Libby one and only. says:

No, don’t be silly- you have receipts to prove your payment- if they suspected you of shoplifting they have to stop you as you leave the store- not phone you when you get home. Make sure you don’t pay twice.

  6. stitched up says:

Only go back at your own convenience, tell them you will bring the receipt next time you’re passing, tell them that for your trouble, you want an apology for the theft accusation, and a discount on your next purchase.

  7. Stephen A says:

You have two receipts for the goods you purchased , if you return to the store and show them , they can not ask you to pay again ,

  8. One step down from God says:

Your receipts PROVE you paid for the goods. Next time you go in (don’t make a special journey) show them the receipts.

  9. TJ says:

you have the receipts to prove you paid. I would not even bother going to them again. you have nothing you need to prove. the burden is on them.

call them back and ask for a manager and have him look for the copies of the receipts that you have to prove them wrong. then ask for a gift certificate or discount for your troubles.

honestly… if it were me… i would go back in.. return the lot and make my purchase elsewhere… that’s not a good business practice they have engaged in and don’t deserve your business.
