A commuter was arrested at gunpoint and had his DNA and fingerprints taken simply for listening to his MP3 player while waiting for a bus.
Darren Nixon was surrounded by armed police after his music player was mistaken for a gun.
When a passer-by saw the 28-year-old get out his black Philips machine to change tracks, she panicked and dialled 999.
Police tracked Mr Nixon using CCTV. As he got off the bus home from work he was surrounded by a firearms unit, who bundled him into a van.
He was then put in a cell and his fingerprints, DNA and mugshot were taken before he was released.
Although police realised it was a false alarm, Mr Nixon, from Stoke-on-Trent, now has to live with his DNA stored on a national database.
Theyre getting it off as many of us as possible…. and keeping it.
They even want to do it to kids while theyre at school !!
They want to get their DNA and fingerprints.
You up there sayin that poop about "if you dont do anything, you got nothing to worry about"…………. 5 year old kids at school havent done anything.
What sort of Communist Ideal have you got ?
New Labour.
They were all Commie Marxists at University.
and they are now.
Its in the Papers today that they want to give all the Kids Numbers and take their DNA and fingerprints and keep em for life. COMMIES
BIG BROTHER SOCIETY.
No. I’m not a criminal, why should I be treated like one?
They do already. And you fingerprints, and you are then placed on a nice big database. The only time that they are not kept is if they are taken for elimination purposes.
Yep! that`s bad – but they will hold onto that dna -
If he stays a law abiding citizen then he’s got nothing to worry about!
No-this is not a police state.
I don’t believe they should. The same applies to juveniles arrested on suspicion but never charged. Talk about big brother. What worries me is that DNA based evidence is not completely infallible and therefore, in theory, could lead to wrongful arrests and convictions. Quite terrifying. It’s all well and good to say that if you are a law abiding citizen then you have nothing to worry about but it seems to me this just isn’t the case.
I know people will be up in arms and scream ‘police state’ but in all honesty, if you have done nothing wrong what do you have to fear, and therefore what problem do you have?
If they started a database I’d be down there giving mine straight away because I’m not a criminal!
Certainly not if all the facts of yours are correct
If Mr Nixon isn’t going to break the law he’s got nothing to worry about, wouldn’t wory me if everyones DNA was on a national database
I personally think that the whole country should be on a Massive DNA database. It would certainly help catching criminals.
I’m a little ambivalent about this. First I’d like to think that we don’t live in a country where the police can do whatever they want to whoever. On the other hand; if he is a law abiding citizen what does it matter?
SO? His details are on a database…does that harm him? Its a simple fact that only the guilty have anything to hide, and having DNA on file is as good a way to clear people as it is to convict them.
"If you’ve done nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about" has been churned out by a lot of articles and smells like propaganda to me.
Nothing to worry about? How about dodgy officials who might interpret your ‘crime’ the way they want to? How about the Home Office losing massive lists of information 3 times in one month (not to mention the amount of times this must have happened before the story grabbed the headlines) Can anyone tell me WHY the authorities need this info if people are innocent?
thats a harrowing story and i feel for the man in question….but….with regards to his DNA being stored on a national database, or any of us having details like that stored….if you are a law abiding citizen then you have nothing to worry about…..your details will only be used in an elimination capacity, and if it helps with solving any sort of crime then it cant be a bad thing…..
In theory it would be a good idea, but it does seem to be more like a big brother state.
The police are going to do as they damn well please.
They are going to do that because the Government empowered them to do so.
People allow the Government to remain in power, either through action or inaction.
If you believe that nothing can be done you will only be proved correct.
If your not part of the solution your part of the problem.
I think he needs a GOOD solicitor to sue the police for wrongful arrest, damages etc. Also to get the records expunged – don’t suppose he’ll get legal aid though that’s reserved for asylum seekers and villains
It’s unfair to be accused but i’d happily volunteer myself if it came into action.
Yes needles suck (no pun intended) but once in a lifetime for a possiblely massive crime drop/investigation help, isn’t that bad in comparison.
No, that’s an infringement of his human rights and if he appeals to Brussels they will make the police remove them, after all european law now takes prescedence over british!
No they should not .
This man has done nothing wrong and has been degraded .
I would hope he has a good solicitor as if it were me i would fight to have my data removed .
