im looking to install a security camera system on my house and i want to put up at least 6 cameras, which one s the best, and does the wirless ones work good or not or should i get the camera’s that are wired ? Im just concerned about having to replace batteries evry other week. I live in a pretty theft prone neighborhood and would like to catch some of the crooks on camera if they try to mess with my house or cars. I dont think i want to pay the monthly service provided by a professional alarm company i just want to scare them and catch them on cameras .
Thanks
There is a good one that Amazon sells for around $700. It has 8 cameras:

I think that if you can find a camera system in your price range, that will work well for you. Most of the camera systems are very similar. One thing to note before you purchase a system is that night vision may or may not work like you think it should. Here are some sample night vision security camera photos:

If you have a good camera, it lets in more light. Many of the cameras that they sell with the systems as a bundle are cheaper cameras. That is because the DVR security unit is pretty expensive itself, so they skimp on the cameras. Do you have anywhere where you can go and see a demo of one of these cameras in person. I have seen some of these systems at Costco or Sams Club that are setup.
Most of the systems will come with some software that can let you know when someone is on your property. They do this by analyzing the pixels for changes in the cameras. Then if there is a change, you can be sent an email or an SMS on your phone. I would make that a requirement of any system that I would purchase.
If you get a system, you can setup your mobile phone to see the cameras. That can be very handy for monitoring. If you get an alert and you are away from your house, you can get on your phone and check out what is going on. A good product for this is Mobiscope:

If you can see a demo of a system and it falls in your budget it will probably do a good job for you. Wired cameras I think are still superior. They do take more work to setup but you don’t have some of those issues you are talking about.
There are tons of good options. Check out http://www.alarmsystemsinfo.com/ for some good articles and advice.
If you live in a bad neighborhood, I would not be so quick to dismiss the idea of a monitored alarm systems. These days you can get wireless cameras that are integrated with alarm systems (monitoring for intrusion, fire, and other conditions) and some of these systems are really smart. As for the cameras themselves, here are some issues to consider:
- Indoor cameras usually cost less, require some light, and are more likely to be wireless
- Outdoor cameras cost more, are more likely to be full infra-red for no light, and are usually hard wired (and therefore probably tougher to install)
Also , if you want full recording, then you need some kind of storage. If that is not required, there are some cameras that just send the image over your broadband connection – even to your cell phone – with no software required, and your computer does not have to be on. The smart cameras are the ones that only record a clip when they are activated by motion. Lots of people point the indoor cameras out their windows, and have motion-activated lights around the property for security – then a smart camera (even low-light) will sense the motion and capture a video clip.
Anyway, lots of options for cameras these days – good luck!
